Application Process

    Cooper Internal Medicine Residency program accepts applications through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). Any information submitted outside of ERAS cannot be accepted.

    Yes, we participate in the NRMP. Applicants must register with NRMP and rank our program to be considered for the match.

    Interviews will be conducted virtually only. You will have the opportunity to meet our team through video conferencing from the comfort of your location. Invited applicants will have an opportunity to meet virtually with a small group of our residents.

    Detailed instructions will be provided to ensure a seamless virtual interview experience.

    While there is no specific minimum score, we consider applicants with competitive USMLE Step 2/COMLEX Level 2 scores. However, the overall application is evaluated holistically, taking into account academic achievements, clinical experiences, and personal attributes.

    Yes, we welcome applications from international medical graduates. IMG applicants should have ECFMG certification and meet all other eligibility criteria. We sponsor J-1 Visa.

    Our selection committee uses a holistic review process for all applications. Invitations for interviews are extended to candidates whose applications demonstrate a strong alignment with our program's values and goals.

    Yes, we offer elective rotations and global health opportunities, allowing residents to gain diverse experiences and broaden their perspectives in health care.

Program Curriculum

    Our residency program is three years in duration.

    Our curriculum at Cooper follows the X + Y format, where X represents 4 weeks of essential service, and Y represents 2 weeks with “golden” weekends (meaning Saturdays and Sundays are off). During these two weeks, one week is dedicated to ambulatory care, and the other week is for electives. As residents progress through their training, they may have the opportunity to have more elective time.

    Our residents gain exposure to a wide range of medical disciplines. The program includes rotations in various specialties, including Cardiology, Critical Care, Gastroenterology, Hematology/Oncology, Infectious Diseases, Nephrology, Pulmonology, Emergency Medicine, Geriatrics, Addiction Medicine, Endocrinology, Palliative Medicine, Radiology & Interventional Radiology, Neurology, Dermatology, Allergy Medicine, Sports Medicine, Rheumatology and more.

    Residents get 4 weeks of vacation per academic year.

    Yes, research opportunities are available, and we encourage residents to participate in scholarly activities during their training. Our faculty members actively support research initiatives. You can refer to our research page.

    Yes, residents receive an educational stipend that they can utilize throughout their three years of residency. Additionally, they also receive a research stipend, which supports their research projects and enables them to present their findings at national conferences.

Life at Cooper

    Cooper is located in Camden, New Jersey, just minutes away from the vibrant and diverse urban setting of Philadelphia. The unique geographical location of Cooper offers residents the choice of living on the more quiet Jersey side or experiencing the more vibrant city life on the Philadelphia side. Some residents prefer the New Jersey setting, while others enjoy the energy of Philadelphia. It's the best of both worlds!

    Residents at Cooper receive comprehensive preparation for the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) exam through a combination of resources. During elective and ambulatory weeks, they participate in daily 7 AM board review sessions, where they review board-style questions. Additionally, they attend educational noon conferences that cover a wide range of medical topics.

    In their third year, residents benefit from a dedicated one-week board review course specifically designed to help them prepare for the internal medicine board examination. This focused approach ensures that they have the knowledge and confidence needed to excel in the exam.
